Abnormal Bleeding

If you have abnormal bleeding from your vagina, the optimal treatment hinges on the root cause of the problem.  Though surgical options have merit in some situations, we will likely try one or several medications before resorting to a surgical procedure.  The aim of using medication is to manage the bleeding and treat the underlying cause.

As an example, medications used to treat abnormal uterine bleeding includes nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, referred to as NSAIDs.  We also provide patients suffering from abnormal bleeding with birth control pills to manage heavy bleeding stemming from a period.  Gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonists help reduce/stop bleeding with the prevention of ovulation.

If necessary, we will consider surgery.  A hysteroscopy procedure removes atypical structures within the uterus such as polyps and fibroids.  A hysterectomy removes the uterus altogether.  Endometrial ablation removes the uterus lining with a laser, freezing or microwave energy.  A myomectomy eliminates fibroids while keeping the uterus intact.  It is also possible to halt the flow of blood to the fibroids, causing them to shrink with a procedure dubbed uterine artery embolization.  If you have abnormal bleeding, reach out to our Reno, NV office today at (775) 210-0885 to schedule an appointment.
