Hysterectomy Q & A

What is a hysterectomy?

When a doctor performs a hysterectomy, they surgically remove some or all of your internal reproductive organs. In a partial hysterectomy, only the uterus is removed. A full, or total hysterectomy involves removing the uterus, cervix, ovaries, and fallopian tubes.

Arathi Veeraswamy, MD, at Reno Tahoe Women’s Health, has extensive experience performing hysterectomies. She prioritizes the safety and personal comfort of each patient during all minimally invasive and open surgical procedures.

Which conditions does a hysterectomy address?

The team at Reno Tahoe Women’s Health typically begins with a conservative approach to treatment. When conservative therapies don’t successfully address a gynecologic condition, a hysterectomy may be necessary.

A hysterectomy can address a variety of gynecologic issues, such as:

  • Endometriosis

  • Abnormal bleeding

  • Uterine fibroids

  • Uterine prolapse

  • Chronic pelvic pain

A hysterectomy can also successfully treat uterine, cervical, or ovarian cancer.

What type of hysterectomy procedure is best for me?

If you have a condition that requires a hysterectomy, Dr. Veeraswamy discusses all your options to assist you in making the best possible choice to meet your personal needs.

Depending on your condition, overall health, and other individual factors, Dr. Veeraswamy may recommend:

Vaginal hysterectomy

A vaginal hysterectomy is a hysterectomy procedure. During this surgery, Dr. Veeraswamy makes a small incision in your vagina and removes your uterus and other affected reproductive organs through this opening.

Laparoscopic hysterectomy

A hysterectomy procedure which involves small incisions in the abdomen. Dr. Veeraswamy uses a lighted instrument called a laparoscope to see inside your body and slender surgical tools to remove your uterus and other affected reproductive organs through the small incisions.

Abdominal hysterectomy

This open, or traditional, surgery involves a larger incision across the abdomen. Dr. Veeraswamy performs a full hysterectomy during this procedure, removing the uterus and other affected reproductive organs.

Vaginal and laparoscopic procedures are minimally invasive, with less bleeding and pain and shorter recovery times. An abdominal procedure requires a short hospital stay and a few weeks of recovery.

What are the risks of a hysterectomy?

Any type of surgical procedure carries some risk. However, the risk of complications is higher for abdominal hysterectomy than for vaginal and laparoscopic procedures.

Risks associated with surgery include:

  • Excessive bleeding

  • Scarring

  • Injury to surrounding tissues

  • Infection

Dr. Veeraswamy discusses all the risks and benefits of a hysterectomy with you before your procedure.
