What is endometriosis?

During your monthly cycle, the lining of your uterus, or endometrium, thickens in preparation for a potential pregnancy. When you have your menstrual period, your uterus contracts to release the thickened layers of the endometrium.

Sometimes, endometrial tissue begins to grow outside of the uterus. This condition is called endometriosis. The abnormal endometrial tissue responds to the hormonal changes during your menstrual cycle in the same way as the lining of your uterus, so it also thickens and bleeds. The bleeding can cause damage to the internal structures of your body.

Endometriosis commonly affects the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the internal area of the pelvis. However, it can develop on the bladder, intestines, and other internal organs. 

What causes endometriosis?

Researchers haven’t yet identified an exact cause of endometriosis. Some cases may involve “retrograde menstruation,” a condition in which menstrual blood flows backward through the fallopian tubes into the pelvic cavity. 

Your risk of endometriosis increases if you have a family member with the condition, and if you’ve never had a pregnancy or delivery.

What are the symptoms of endometriosis?

Endometriosis causes pelvic pain and worsens menstrual cramping. Additional symptoms include: 

• Heavy periods

• Abnormal bleeding

• Painful urination

• Painful intercourse

• Bowel or urinary dysfunction

• Chronic fatigue

Endometriosis has been linked to infertility, but in many cases, treatment for the condition also restores fertility.
